Tactical Rope Access Program: Essential Skills for SWAT Teams

1000 - 1200
Vilander, Dana

SEMINAR

Location: Chesapeake 1-3

This presentation will explore why a SWAT ropes program can and should be more than just rappelling. There are numerous tactical advantages to maintaining an integrated, professional-quality rope program. Foremost among them is team and self-preservation when operating above ground level in any structure. Additional operational benefits include the ability to conduct rescues, perform tactical insertions and extractions, deploy diversionary devices or chemical agents, and navigate challenging terrain during missions. Given the wide range of specialized skills required of SWAT teams - many of which demand certification and recertification - it is essential that rope access practitioners also undergo a formal certification process. This is especially important considering that rope access is a high-risk, low-frequency skill. As such, it is a perishable skill that demands ongoing, consistent training to ensure both competence and safety.
