Incident Debrief: Canfield Mountain Active Shooter Incident

INCIDENT DEBRIEF

On June 29, 2025, multiple fire agencies responded to a woodland fire on the west side of Canfield Mountain, just east of the City of Coeur d'Alene, ID. While working the fire, an armed assailant ambushed three of the firefighters, killing two and gravely wounding the third. Active shooter calls went out from the firefighters onscene, triggering a large law enforcement response from Coeur d'Alene and Kootenai County agencies as well as nearby Spokane, WA law enforcement agencies. Initial responding officers were met with gun fire from the suspect who had taken an elevated position in the tree line. An officer involved shooting occurred and the injured firefighter was evacuated. for the next 4 hours, multiple tactical teams worked on the recovery of the deceased fire officers as well as tactics to locate and arrest the suspect. Through the use of technology, the suspect was located deceased in the forest from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
