During the early morning hours of September 22, 2022, law enforcement from the Clallam County Sheriff's Office and the Sequim Police Department responded to a domestic violence assault. The suspect, who lived in a detached shop on the property, had struck his girlfriend in the head with an axe and threatened to kill himself. Officers attempted to contact the suspect, who fired at them from inside the shop. Additional law enforcement personnel responded, including members of the Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team and Washington State Patrol Special Weapons and Tactics team. Over the course of several hours, the suspect fired dozens of rounds from inside the shop. Negotiators attempted to contact the suspect via cellular phone, loudspeaker, and robot; he did not respond. The SWAT team employed technology and less lethal tools to encourage the suspect's surrender. The suspect exited the shop holding a shotgun. He ignored repeated commands to stop advancing and drop the firearm. After being struck with a less lethal 40mm projectile, he pointed the shotgun directly at officers. Three team members shot the suspect, causing him to fall to the ground inches away from the firearm. The SWAT team devised a safe approach and provided aid to the suspect, who was deceased.
