

Mitchell, NickNick is the court-appointed federal monitor of a Department of Justice consent decree involving the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and previously served as the Independent Monitor of the Denver Police and Sheriff Departments. As Independent Monitor, Nick partnered with law enforcement agencies to conduct data-driven after-action reviews of police practices, including the handling of the 2020 civil unrest in Denver. Nick also led an after-action review of the City of Portland's handling of that same civil unrest, which resulted in the adoption of new approaches, policies, and practices for public order policing in Portland.
Nick has received awards from the Denver Bar Association and the National Association for Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement and has been recognized as an expert on civilian oversight and law enforcement reform in CNN, the New Yorker, and other national publications. Nick is a graduate of Fordham Law School and is a former Gates Foundation Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He was recently appointed Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Colorado to investigate allegations of misconduct among justices of the Colorado Supreme Court and is a former member of the Board of Governors of the Colorado Bar Association.
