On January 24, 2025, at approximately 1800 hours, Atchison Police Officers responded to a call of an attempted break-in. A male subject, identified as Bryson A., kicked in the door at 508 N. 9th Street, Apartment 8, in Atchison, KS, and took Taylor R. Bonar hostage. Officers from the Atchison Police Department responded and were met with gunfire from Bryson. He then moved Taylor to Apartment 9. The Atchison Police Department activated its Special Response Team (SRT) and requested assistance from the Kansas Highway Patrol SRT and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation's High Risk Warrant Team (HRWT).
A standoff ensued, and after several hours of negotiations, a deliberate rescue plan was developed. While rescue elements were staged and awaiting execution of the plan, Trooper Beas observed the suspect through a window tying up the victim. Recognizing a window of opportunity, Trooper Beas fired three shots, striking the suspect in the head and incapacitating him. The KHP rescue team breached the windows and entered Apartment 9, while the KBI team made entry through the front door. Taylor was safely rescued and transported to EMS for evaluation. Taylor was not injured during the incident, and no officers were injured.
